There are so many exciting students in my Peer-tutoring class to observe and it was difficult for me to try to find one specific person to view and note on their characteristics and behaviours for a week.(It is important to keep in mind that I peer tutor GLP gym class and help students with special needs ) .Ultimately I picked a student that I have been working one on one with a lot more than others. This student has major learning disabilities and needs more help than other students in the class .He, whom will be called Bob throughout this journal entry , has a difficult time understanding and following the instructions given out by the teacher. I selected him because I thought that it would be interesting to learn more about how students with special needs, interact and work with others.
Bob is very good at showing interest in different activities even if he finds the matter hard to understand. He makes sure that he asks for extra help and does not give up until he feels that he has caught up with the rest of the students. For example when everyone in the class is doing pushes and he does not know how to do them, he looks at other students first to see how they are doing it, and then asks for help so he can improve and learn the correct method. Bob has disabilities that prevent him from keeping up with everything that the teacher is instructing to the rest of the class and needs a lot of one on one help. He also sometimes has a hard time concentrating and staying on task which makes working with him quite difficult since you constantly have to fight for his attention.
I had many interactions with Bob which assisted me with getting to know his characteristics and also helped me understand the difficulties that a person with learning disabilities goes through on tasks that may be quite simple for you and I. Throughout the week I helped Bob in different areas that he needed help with ,such as ; showing him how to do pushes, teaching him the correct methods so he does not get hurt , explaining the games /drills that we encountered during the week ,talking to him about healthy daily tasks for example brushing teeth , washing hands ,etc. some goals that I would like to help this student achieve is to help him with posture during pushes and make sure he is able to do them correctly, try to keep him focused and interested during activates and last but not least make sure he always brings his change of cloths and deodorant for class.
