Hey everyone. As you all know, well you might not, but I am currently peer tutoring grade 9 academic math course which is being taught by Mrs. Holness. As a peer tutor, I have been through many interesting incidents. Some I enjoyed, while others, not so much. However, the most satisfying experience I had as a peer tutor this far would probably be when I was assigned to take about 9 students and explain to them what they did wrong on a quiz. There was a requiz that was made by me, and those 9 students had to write it the next day. I was incharge of making sure I explain to all these students everything on the quiz, and insure that every single one of them recieves a mark of 60%+. Most of the students scored over 60%, except for one student who was 5% off.
Being Mrs. Holness's peer tutor, I noticed some great teaching techniques. One of her major techniques is what I like to call the "neener neener." This technique is based on using humorous terms while explaining a lesson to maintain the students' attention. Mrs. Holness uses terms such as: Neener Neener, chicketies, ExacKALAKALy, etc. Every term has a different meaning, Neener neener is used to alert the class that whatever is now being said is important. The word "Chicketies" is used to add a sense of humour to a dry topic such as explaining slope, (e.g. Slope equals rise over run chicketies!) Exackalakaly is also another word used to add a sense of humour to a topic where students loose attention easily, (e.g. Therefore the slope is exacKALAKALy 3). There are many other terms Mrs. Holness uses to grab the attention of all the students and I think that's what makes her such a wonderful teacher!
