Blog #1: Malaz's Introduction..

Hey, my name is Malaz. I'm in grade 11 and I am currently peer tutoring grade 9 academic math (MPM1D). Given this great chance to peer tutor such a class has, and will help me in many ways. I have already gained a lot of experience and I am looking forward to gaining more. In this class there are 4 crutial tasks that i must complete daily, these include: Taking attendance, Checking the handback folder, checking homework and updating the homework calender. However, there are many other tasks that I am responsible to complete when told by the teacher. Some include: Collecting quizes and totalling the marks, look for whoever has missed class and help him or her catch up with the missed work (this means I may have to explain a lesson), and go around during classwork time looking for students that are struggeling and help explain a possible way they could approach their problem. Sometimes I may get a one time task, this has happened during the grade 8 visit to our school, where I had to organize a game for our visitors to keep them entertained. One day, I hope to get the opportunity to write notes on the board while the teacher explains the lesson, or maybe even create a game that would get the class thinking.

  1. Malaz,
Nicely written - a game is a great idea for the math class. It makes the content less intimidating and allows students to have fun with their learning. Do you already have an idea for the kind of game that you would introduce?

  2. Hey Malaz, I chose to respond to your blog because we are basically peer tutoring the same class, minus a bit of the enriched!

Do you mark the weekly vocabulary/ have you ever done it yourself? e.g Reading out the words and giving instructions.

I did it once, it was pretty nerve wracking.

I think creating a game is a really good idea because sometimes English has a tendency to be repetitive at times. I agree with your comment about wanting to get the class thinking, I'd like to do the same for my class! It's always nice to see the opinions of others and how they go about discussing their views and oppositions.

As for the searching for those who are struggling, I do the same. Ms.Bech showed me signs of how you know when a child is having trouble by just looking at their body language, it's actually quite true! Do you have specific students you have to pay attention to?

Anyways, it'll be good to continue reading your blogs so we can compare how are classes are going!

    P.S who's your host teacher?

    Goodluck!

  3. Hello Malaz,
I have chosen to respond to your blog because even though the classes we are peer tutoring are completely different, it seems as though the experience you are gaining from it is a lot similar to mine. I have learned so much from my host teacher already, and just like you hope to take on their job for a class to see what it feels like to have that pressure of making sure all the students understand what I am trying to teach them. I hope that experience of teaching the class goes well for the both of us.
Also your idea of creating a game sounds really good. I'm sure the students in grade 9 will have a lot of fun doing that.
    Goodluck :)

  4. Mrs. Harris, Yeah I picked creating a game because I thought it would help make the material not so dry. However, I'm not quite sure what I am going to introduce in the game, I will keep you updated though!
    haha oh man..
I'm sorry yad!!!! I put english instead of math by accident! i appologize again!
But im going to answer all your questions anyways :]. Yeah I do have specific students that I need to pay attention and provide lots of help to them, this is because they do not always understand my host teacher and they struggle when doing the work. My host teacher is Mrs.Holness, shes a great teacher. and lilly! thanks for the reply and its great hearing that ur also gaining experience from your host teacher, I hope you gain as much experience as possible from such opportunity! Also, yeah I have a feeling students in grade 9 would enjoy a little game, but I am not quite sure what to introduce in the game yet!
