Hi! My name is Chelsey Lee, and I am peer tutoring ELD DO. I am in grade 11. The class is such a small class; however, I find it nice to take care of them individually since the students need extra help with their English skills. I understand their issues with English well because I’ve been through ESL courses as an international student.
When the class starts, I attempt to make casual conversation with everyone to make them feel comfortable using English and check their homework. I constantly display new vocabularies or expressions from novel or short stories on wall because it helps the students to learn visually. Currently, we are reading a novel called “Seedfolks,” and I am creating comics to help them understand better. On every Friday, I help them with writing journal. Sometimes, I meet each student outside of class and make corrections by reading it out loud.
I would like to initiate in class by creating more awesome activities to make everyone confident about themselves when they speak English even though it is not their mother tongue. Most of the students are very attempted to improve their English; therefore, I am looking forward to play more grammar games and making dialogues.

Chelsey,
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you have to be very versatile in your placement. You have many opportunities to develop meaningful interactions with the students in the class, which will only add to their comfort. Keep up the good work.

Hi Chelsey! I chose your blog since I feel like there is a lot of similarities with the class you peer tutor and mine. I peer tutor students with special needs which is kind of similar to your class since the students in you class also need more help understanding the material being taught. I also have to work with some students individually and make sure that they are doing what they have been asked correctly and to the best of their abilities. I love how you spend your time even outside class to help the students with their English! I remember way back when I was new to Canada , the environment was so much different than back home and at the begging I felt so alone but with the help of teachers and students like yourself, shortly after I felt comfortable socializing and I was able to come out of my shell! Keep up the great work and know that you will be remembered by many people for your help and kindness<3!

Hey Chelsey, i chose your blog because after reading what you wrote i found that the classes we peer tutor are very similar. We both peer tutor a class full of students where they are having difficulties with reading, writing and just the English language in general. I think it is great that you read their journals out loud to them, so they notice their mistakes when hearing another person read it. I also do that with the class i peer tutor for, and i find that it is very helpful to them. I noticed that when peer tutoring a class full of student that are not fluent in English, it really helps to always break down the question or problem that they are having into many steps. That is one useful tool that i have learned myself during the time i have peer tutored. I really like the idea of the activities you want to initiate to not just help them improve in their writing and reading, but to gain confidence in theirselves. I think that is a very important thing to have when trying to do something, and helping them do that is awesome. Seems like you are doing a great job. Keep it up!:)
